Border Station Under Siege by Thousands of Zulus
On the evening of January 22, 1879, the silhouettes of thousands of Zulu warriors began to appear on the horizon around the Rorke's Drift mission station. The British garrison, numbering only about 150 men, was feverishly preparing for the attack. Commanders John Chard and Gonville Bromhead quickly organized the defense, using sandbags and crates of supplies as barricades. They knew their only hope was to hold their positions until reinforcements arrived.
The Zulus attacked in several waves, but the British soldiers defended with tenacity and precision. Each assault was repelled thanks to carefully prepared defensive positions and effective gunfire. In critical moments, when it seemed the defense might falter, the soldiers retreated to the inner areas and continued the fight.
