Three Days of Determined Maori Resistance
On the outskirts of the Ōrākau fort, surrounded by dense forests and swamps, approximately 300 Maori, including women and children, gathered. The fort was hastily constructed from wooden palisades and earthen ramparts. British colonial forces, numbering around 1400 soldiers, approached with the clear objective of breaking Maori resistance and solidifying their control over the territory. The Maori were determined to defend their land at all costs.
The battle began on March 31, 1864, when British forces launched their attack. Despite being outnumbered, the Maori bravely repelled the assaults, using their knowledge of the terrain to their advantage. After three days of intense fighting, exhausted and without supplies, they decided to break through the encirclement. At night, they attempted to escape through the swamps, but many were captured or killed. Their bravery, however, became legendary.
The Battle of Ōrākau was one of the last major engagements of the New Zealand Wars. Although the Maori suffered defeat, their determination and courage left a lasting impression on both the British and the local population.
