Custer's Fateful Mistake at Little Bighorn

At dawn on June 25, 1876, General George Armstrong Custer decided to divide his 7th Cavalry forces into three parts to surprise the Native American camp by the Little Bighorn River in Montana. Custer believed he was facing only a small group of natives. However, he was unaware that he would encounter thousands of warriors from the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes, who were prepared to defend their land.

As soon as Custer's unit attacked, the Native American warriors, led by the charismatic chiefs Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, quickly organized a counterattack. Custer's troops were surrounded and completely destroyed within a few hours. Custer himself fell in battle along with all his men. The decision to divide his forces proved to be a fatal mistake, leading to one of the greatest defeats of the U.S. Army in the Indian Wars.

The Battle of Little Bighorn became a symbol of Native American resistance against the westward expansion of the United States. Although the victory of the Native Americans was short-lived, as the U.S. government subsequently strengthened its military operations, the battle remains remembered as a testament to the courage and determination of the native warriors. Additionally, Custer's defeat evoked mixed feelings in American society and led to increased pressure on Native American tribes.
