The Fateful Shots in Sarajevo
On a hot June day in 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie were driving through the streets of Sarajevo. Their car was part of an official procession meant to demonstrate Austro-Hungarian power in Bosnia. A young Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Black Hand group, was waiting for the right moment. When the car stopped, he fired and fatally wounded the Archduke and his wife.
The assassination triggered a wave of diplomatic ultimatums and mobilizations. Austria-Hungary, supported by Germany, accused Serbia of supporting terrorism and declared war on July 28, 1914. This act set off a chain reaction of alliances and commitments among European powers. Within a week, Russia, Germany, France, and Britain were drawn into the conflict. The war, expected to be swift, turned into a long and exhausting struggle.
World War I introduced new technologies and tactics, such as trenches, tanks, and chemical weapons. The result was approximately 10 million fallen soldiers and millions more civilian casualties. After four years of fighting, the war ended in 1918 with new borders and collapsed empires. The Treaty of Versailles that followed had long-term consequences and sowed the seeds for future conflicts in the 20th century.
