The Fateful Landing on Enemy Shores
The gray dawn of April 25, 1915, revealed ships filled with soldiers approaching the shores of the Gallipoli Peninsula. British, Australian, New Zealand, and French troops were preparing for a landing that was meant to change the course of the war. The goal was to break through the Ottoman defenses and open the way to Istanbul. The soldiers, many of them young and inexperienced, faced steep cliffs and well-fortified Turkish positions.
As soon as the first boats touched the shore, Turkish machine gun fire erupted. The defenders managed to exploit the terrain advantage. The allied troops, scattered across the beaches, quickly lost coordination. Attempts to break through were futile, and as the soldiers tried to dig in and hold their positions, casualties on both sides mounted. Inadequate logistical support and underestimation of the Turkish defenses caused the operation to stall.
After nine months of fierce fighting and enormous losses, with over 250,000 allied soldiers killed or wounded, the campaign was terminated. The landing at Gallipoli became a symbol of military failure and loss. For Australia and New Zealand, it marked the emergence of national identity, and the memory of these events is still commemorated today with the annual ANZAC Day.
