Venetian Adventurer on the Brink of the Unknown

At the beginning of the year 1271, a small group of travelers gathered in Venice, led by the experienced merchant Niccolo Polo and his brother Maffeo. They were joined by Niccolo's seventeen-year-old son Marco. They embarked on a journey that would change their lives and Europe's perspective on Asia. Their destination was distant China, a realm whispered about in Europe. The journey promised not only trade opportunities but also adventure and unknown worlds.

After months of traveling across inhospitable steppes and mountains, the Polos arrived at the court of the powerful Kublai Khan, ruler of the Mongol Empire. Thanks to his sharp wit and language skills, Marco became a favored member of the Khan's court. He was entrusted with important tasks and had the opportunity to learn about life in China up close. His observations and experiences became the foundation for later reports that revealed the wealth and culture of this distant land to Europeans.

Marco Polo spent seventeen years in China, and his return to Venice was a triumph of knowledge. His accounts, recorded in the book "The Travels of Marco Polo," opened the European horizon and inspired generations of travelers and merchants, including Christopher Columbus. Polo thus inadvertently laid the groundwork for future discoveries and trade routes that would change the world forever.
