On the night of July 18, 64, a fire suddenly broke out in the narrow streets of Rome. The flames quickly spread through the wooden buildings that made up most of the city. Romans, accustomed to smaller fires, were helpless this time. Chaos and panic gripped the city as people tried to save their lives and property. No one at the time knew that the fire would leave an indelible mark on history.
The fire raged for nine days and destroyed ten of Rome's fourteen districts. Emperor Nero, who was out of the city at the time, tried to organize aid and reconstruction upon his return. However, rumors soon spread that he had ordered the fire himself to rebuild Rome according to his own designs. To divert attention, he blamed the Christians, leading to their brutal persecution.
The fire changed Rome not only physically but also socially. The city was partially rebuilt with wider streets and new building regulations to prevent similar disasters. Although Christians were persecuted, their faith continued to spread. Paradoxically, the fire contributed to their visibility and the later growth of their influence in the Roman Empire.
