In the spring of 306, soldiers gathered in the Roman military camp at Eboracum, present-day York, to pay homage to a new emperor. Constantine, the son of the late Emperor Constantius Chlorus, had just been proclaimed emperor by his men. His father had died during a campaign in Britain, and the soldiers, loyal to his family, saw Constantine as the natural successor. Constantine accepted the title knowing that his path to power would be fraught with challenges and rivalry.

Constantine's reign began at a time when the Roman Empire faced internal strife and external threats. To solidify his position, he had to fight against other claimants to the throne. In 312, he confronted his rival Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. According to legend, before the battle, he had a vision of a cross with the inscription 'In this sign, you will conquer.' Constantine's reforms and the adoption of Christianity as the official religion of the empire had far-reaching consequences. His decision to establish Constantinople as the new capital strengthened his power in the east and influenced the future division of the empire. Constantine's reign marked the end of the persecution of Christians and laid the foundations for the flourishing of Christian culture in Europe.
