The First Attempt at Lasting World Peace

In January 1920, the world stood on the threshold of a new era. In Paris, where people were still recovering from the aftermath of World War I, representatives of the victorious powers gathered. At the conference, which was to determine the future of the post-war world, the idea of the League of Nations was born. Its aim was to prevent a recurrence of the destruction brought by the recent conflict and to create a platform for international cooperation.

The League of Nations was officially established on January 10, 1920. Its ambitious goals included resolving disputes between states without the use of arms and promoting collective security. However, many countries remained skeptical of its effectiveness, and the United States, which was one of the main initiators of the idea, ultimately decided not to join. Thus, the League had to face challenges without a key player on the international stage.

Although the League of Nations could not prevent the outbreak of World War II, its existence was not in vain. It provided valuable experience for future international cooperation, and its structure inspired the creation of the United Nations after 1945. The League became the first step towards institutionalizing efforts for world peace, leaving a lasting mark on the history of diplomacy.
