Three Shots That Changed Russia

On a chilly afternoon of August 30, 1918, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin stood in front of the Michelson factory in Moscow. He had just finished a speech to the workers and was about to get into his car. Among the waiting crowd was Fanny Kaplan, a determined member of the Socialist-Revolutionaries, who disagreed with the Bolshevik government. She held a revolver in her hand, waiting for the right moment. Her plan was clear: to eliminate Lenin and stop the Bolshevik regime.

As Lenin exited the factory, Kaplan fired three shots. Two of them hit Lenin in the shoulder and neck. Lenin collapsed but remained conscious. Despite the serious injuries, he survived, which was considered a miracle by many. Kaplan was immediately arrested and executed within a few days. However, her act did not go without consequences—it became a pretext for a harsh Bolshevik response.

The assassination attempt on Lenin led to a massive wave of repression known as the Red Terror. The Bolsheviks began systematically eliminating their political opponents and consolidating their power. This act of violence strengthened Lenin's resolve and legitimized the harsh methods the Bolsheviks used to maintain control. Lenin's survival and the subsequent repression left a deep mark on Russian history and influenced its future direction.
