Geothermal Springs Attracted the First Settlers

Ingólfur Arnarson stood on the shore of a new world. Before him lay Iceland, barren and uninhabited, except for a few seabirds. Around him rose steam from geothermal springs, promising warmth and energy. For the Norwegian chieftain and his entourage, it was the ideal place to establish a new home. He came here to start a new life far from the Norwegian shores.

Ingólfur chose Reykjavik after a ritual where he threw his carved pillars into the sea and watched where they landed. It was here, in the place he called 'smoky bay', that he built the first settlement. This decision sparked a wave of Viking colonization. New settlers arrived, bringing with them their customs, culture, and way of life, which gradually adapted to the harsh conditions of the island.

The founding of Reykjavik was not just the beginning of a city, but also the start of a unique Icelandic culture. The Vikings brought their traditions and legal system, which evolved into a unique society. Iceland became a place where nature mixed with human courage and ingenuity. Today, Reykjavik is a modern city, whose roots trace back to the time when the first settlers saw their new home in the steam above the springs.
