Tension filled the Convention Hall on July 27, 1794, as deputies gathered for debate. Maximilien Robespierre, once the feared leader of the Jacobins, faced growing opposition. During the session, Robespierre attempted to speak and defend himself but was interrupted by shouts of 'Down with the tyrant!' The atmosphere quickly shifted as his opponents, led by Tallien and Billaud-Varenne, gained the upper hand. Robespierre was arrested right in the hall, which was unbelievable to many. The once all-powerful man was now powerless and awaited his fate.
His downfall marked the end of the reign of terror that had plagued the country. The following day, Robespierre was executed by guillotine, symbolically closing the chapter of terror. The Thermidorian Reaction brought change as the new regime began to restore order and stability. France gradually embarked on a path toward a more moderate government, allowing a return to a more normal life.
