The Final Surrender at the Alhambra

On the slope beneath the majestic Alhambra palace, crowds of people gathered. It was January 2, 1492, and Granada, the last stronghold of Muslim power on the Iberian Peninsula, was about to fall. Emir Boabdil, surrounded by his loyal followers, was preparing to hand over the keys of the city to the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile. After centuries of conflict, the Reconquista was nearing its end.

Ferdinand and Isabella accepted the keys with a triumphant sense of victory. For Boabdil, it marked the end of his reign and the beginning of exile. Granada, known for its cultural and architectural beauty, now became part of a unified Spain. This act completed the long period of Christian reconquest that had begun in the 8th century.

The conquest of Granada strengthened Spain's position as a European power. The unification of the country enabled the royal couple to support new ambitions, such as Christopher Columbus's expedition, which in the same year discovered the New World. The surrender of Granada not only changed the map of the Iberian Peninsula but also opened the doors to an era of overseas discoveries and expansion.
