Columbus Sets Sail from Palos de la Frontera

On the morning of August 3, 1492, the port town of Palos de la Frontera was filled with anticipation. Christopher Columbus, an Italian navigator in the service of the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, stood on the deck of his flagship, the Santa María. Next to it were anchored the smaller ships, the Pinta and the Niña. Columbus believed he was sailing west to find a new route to the wealthy Asia, and his crew shared both hopes and fears of the unknown.

The voyage across the Atlantic Ocean was challenging and full of uncertainty for the crew. After weeks at sea, when many had begun to doubt the success of the expedition, on October 12, 1492, a cry of 'Land!' was heard from the Pinta. Columbus landed on an island he named San Salvador. He was unaware that instead of Asia, he had discovered a new continent that would forever change world history.

Columbus's discovery led to the rapid development of European colonization of the Americas. This brief moment when Columbus set foot on the soil of the New World marked the beginning of an era of exploration that brought new wealth and conflicts.
