Aboard the ship Duyfken, weary from the long voyage, Willem Janszoon's crew tried to discern the outlines of land. It was the year 1606, and Janszoon was tasked with exploring new trade routes for the Dutch East India Company. As they approached the unknown land, they believed they had reached the southern tip of New Guinea, which was their original expectation.
Upon landing on the Cape York Peninsula, the crew encountered a harsh landscape and hostile natives. Janszoon, unaware that he was on the brink of a new continent, recorded his observations and decided to continue the voyage. The lack of gold and spices, which the Dutch desired, led them to consider the place of little significance.
Although Janszoon did not realize the importance of his discovery, his voyage opened the door for other European explorers. Australia, then known as Terra Australis Incognita, gradually became the focus of powers seeking new territories. Janszoon's mistake, thinking the land was part of New Guinea, remained in history as the first European contact with the Australian mainland.
