Van Gogh paints The Starry Night

Vincent's View from the Asylum Window

In 1889, Vincent van Gogh was in an asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Housed in a small room with barred windows, he sought escape through his art. During the night, while others slept, Vincent observed the night sky, which became his inspiration. His mind was as restless as the movement of the stars he saw from his window.

Under these conditions, van Gogh began painting Starry Night. He transferred the swirling sky, glowing stars, and moon, which seemed to be in motion, onto the canvas. The village below was calm, but the sky lived its own life. Vincent used bold brush strokes and vivid colors to express his inner turmoil and fascination with the nocturnal world.

Starry Night became one of the most significant works of post-impressionism. Although van Gogh did not gain recognition during his lifetime, his work influenced generations of artists. The painting now hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and continues to captivate viewers with its emotional power and unique perspective on the world.
