At Los Rodeos Airport in Tenerife, dense fog made visibility difficult. Two giant Boeing 747 aircraft, one from KLM and the other from Pan Am, were waiting for clearance to take off. Due to flight diversions from another airport, Los Rodeos was overcrowded, leading to a tense situation. The crews of both planes were nervous and in a hurry to avoid further delays.
As KLM began to take off, the Pan Am crew was trying to find the correct path on the runway. Due to the fog and a misunderstanding in communication with the control tower, both planes ended up on the same runway. KLM accelerated at full speed, unaware that Pan Am was still on the runway.
