Start of the Parthenon Construction

The Commencement of a Monumental Project on the Acropolis

In 447 BC, craftsmen, architects, and workers gathered on the Athenian Acropolis to begin the construction of the Parthenon. Under the leadership of Pericles, a powerful Athenian statesman, the project commenced not only to honor the goddess Athena but also to demonstrate the strength and cultural sophistication of Athens. On the site where an older temple, destroyed during the Persian Wars, once stood, a new symbol of civic pride was now taking shape.

The construction was led by renowned architects Ictinus and Callicrates, who designed the temple with an emphasis on perfect proportions and elegance. With the help of the sculptor Phidias, who was responsible for the decoration, workers began processing marble from a nearby quarry in Pentelicon. Each stone had to be meticulously crafted and placed with precision to ensure the harmony of the entire work. This process took several years and required immense effort and skill.

The Parthenon became not only a religious center but also a symbol of Athenian power and cultural flourishing. Upon its completion in 432 BC, it served as a treasury and a place of worship. Its architectural influence is evident even today, inspiring buildings around the world. The Parthenon remains one of the most significant works of classical architecture and a symbol of ancient Greece.
