The Mercury Column Unveils the Secrets of the Atmosphere

In 1643, Evangelista Torricelli, an Italian physicist and mathematician, set out to solve a mystery that his predecessor Galileo Galilei had not fully explained — why pumps could not lift water above a certain height. Torricelli focused on the idea that air itself might have weight and exert pressure. In the laboratory, he filled a long glass tube with mercury, sealed it, and inverted it into a container of mercury, thus creating the first barometer.

As soon as Torricelli inverted the tube, the mercury inside fell and created a vacuum, confirming his theory of atmospheric pressure. This simple experiment, using only mercury and a glass tube, led to a revolutionary discovery — air has weight and its pressure can be measured. Torricelli's barometer became the first instrument to measure atmospheric pressure and opened the door to a new understanding of physical laws.

Thanks to Torricelli's invention, scientists could begin to make weather predictions with greater accuracy. The barometer became a key tool in meteorology, allowing people to better understand the dynamics of the atmosphere. This invention not only changed the scientific perception of the world but also laid the foundations for further advances in physics and meteorology that continue to affect our lives today.
