The Earthquake That Forever Changed Haiti

On the evening of January 12, 2010, as people in Port-au-Prince were returning home from work, the ground suddenly began to vibrate. The tremors, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, lasted only a few dozen seconds but were enough to collapse thousands of buildings. Many of them were constructed without regard for seismic standards, which had fatal consequences. People tried to escape from the debris as dust and chaos hovered over the city.

The earthquake struck an area with a high population density, leading to massive loss of life. The exact number of casualties remains unknown, but estimates speak of more than 200,000 dead. Rescuers, both local and international, struggled to reach survivors trapped under the rubble. Humanitarian aid began to flow into the country, but logistical problems, such as destroyed roads and airports, complicated its distribution.
