How Timbuktu Became a Trade Jewel

On the edge of the vast Sahara, in what is now Mali, a nomadic Tuareg tribe settled in the mid-11th century. They were searching for a place to pitch their tents and rest after long journeys. They chose a location near the Niger River, which offered water and a strategic position at the crossroads of trade routes. Thus, Timbuktu was founded, soon to become a center of trade and culture in West Africa.

Timbuktu quickly grew due to its position on the trans-Saharan trade routes. Traders from Africa and the Middle East brought gold, salt, ivory, and other valuable goods here. The city became a meeting place for various cultures and religions. The first brick and stone buildings began to be constructed, gradually replacing the original nomadic tents, and the city acquired its characteristic appearance.

Thanks to trade and cultural exchange, Timbuktu became a center of learning. Universities and libraries were established here, attracting scholars from all over the world. The city became famous for its intellectual wealth and became a symbol of knowledge and education. Timbuktu thus influenced not only regional but also world history, and to this day is synonymous with a distant and mysterious place full of treasures.
