A Compromise Between Sydney and Melbourne
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Australia found itself in a dilemma. Sydney and Melbourne, the two largest cities, were competing for the title of the capital of the newly federated country. To avoid rivalry, it was decided to build a new city. After long discussions, an area in New South Wales, approximately halfway between the two cities, was chosen as the site.
In 1913, under the leadership of American architect Walter Burley Griffin, the ambitious plan began to take shape. Griffin designed the city with modern urban planning principles in mind, including wide boulevards, green spaces, and water features. During a ceremonial event on March 12, 1913, Canberra was officially founded, attended by many prominent figures, including the Governor-General.

Over the years, important national institutions, including the parliament and museums, have been established here, attracting visitors from around the world.
