In 1936, Raynham Hall, a majestic estate in Norfolk, became the center of attention due to a mysterious photograph. Photographers Hubert C. Provand and Indre Shira were commissioned to capture the interior for Country Life magazine. When they focused on the grand staircase, their camera allegedly captured something unusual—a translucent female figure that seemed to be descending the stairs.

The image immediately caused a stir. Many believed that the photograph captured the ghost of Lady Dorothy Walpole, who lived in Raynham Hall in the 18th century. According to legend, Dorothy was imprisoned in the house by her jealous husband and died there under mysterious circumstances. Debates about the authenticity of the image flared up and have not been definitively resolved to this day.
