In the early morning hours of May 29, 1453, the sounds of drums and horns echoed over the walls of Constantinople. The Ottoman army, led by the young Sultan Mehmed II, was preparing for the final assault. The city's defenders, exhausted after weeks of siege, desperately tried to hold their positions. On their side stood the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI, who knew that the fate of the city and the entire empire was in his hands.
Mehmed II ordered his troops to attack in several waves. The first two were repelled, but the third wave, composed of elite Janissary units, broke through the defense. Ottoman cannons, which had been bombarding the walls for weeks, left weak spots in the city's fortifications that the attackers exploited.
