Evacuation Saved Thousands of Lives
At the foot of Mount Pinatubo, thousands of people gathered, forced to leave their homes. Soldiers and volunteers helped residents pack their belongings and board the prepared vehicles. The volcano, considered dormant for centuries, began showing signs of activity as early as April 1991. Scientists from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, along with American colleagues, monitored the situation and warned of an impending disaster.
On June 15, 1991, a massive eruption occurred. The volcano ejected about 10 cubic kilometers of volcanic material into the atmosphere. Ash covered the surrounding area, and the plume of smoke reached a height of 34 kilometers. Thousands of people had already been evacuated, but those who remained faced darkness and falling ash. The eruption was accompanied by heavy rains, which caused lahars—dangerous volcanic mudflows that destroyed entire villages.
The immediate aftermath was catastrophic: hundreds dead, thousands of homes destroyed, and tens of thousands of people left homeless. In the long term, however, the eruption also affected the global climate. Volcanic dust in the atmosphere caused a drop in average temperatures on Earth by several tenths of a degree Celsius. This eruption brought new insights into volcanic risks and highlighted the importance of timely evacuation and international cooperation in monitoring volcanoes.
