Sound of Eruption Heard Thousands of Kilometers Away

At the end of August 1883, the sky over the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra began to ominously change. The Krakatoa volcano, which had been showing increased activity for several months, was preparing for its devastating eruption. Local residents witnessed unusual phenomena such as columns of ash and hot lava rising into the sky. Although some people left their homes, many stayed, unaware of the catastrophic consequences that awaited them.

On August 27, 1883, a series of massive explosions shook the entire region. The largest of these was heard up to 4,800 kilometers away, a distance equivalent to the journey from London to New York. The pressure wave circled the Earth seven times. The eruption caused a huge tsunami that swept onto the coasts of Java and Sumatra, destroying villages and towns and leaving devastation and thousands of dead in its wake.

The aftermath of the Krakatoa eruption was felt worldwide. Fine particles of ash spread through the air, causing a drop in temperature and affecting the climate for several subsequent years. Sunsets became unusually beautiful due to the scattering of light on the ash particles. The disaster led to new insights into volcanic eruptions and changed the perspective on the safety and monitoring of volcanoes in similar areas.
