The Giant Machine That Forever Changed Calculations

In a cold room filled with wires and flickering vacuum tubes stood ENIAC, a colossal machine that occupied an entire room. Thousands of vacuum tubes, which formed its heart, were about to show the world what they could do. Military personnel and engineers involved in the project watched with anticipation as ENIAC, after years of development, demonstrated its capabilities to the public for the first time.

ENIAC started up and began performing complex calculations that would take human mathematicians weeks to complete. Its performance was astounding: it could execute 5,000 operations per second. Although its programming was lengthy and required physical rewiring, it showed that electronic computers had the potential to surpass human limits in speed and accuracy of calculations.

The birth of ENIAC marked the beginning of a new era. It was the first step towards today's computers, which fit in the palm of your hand and handle incomparably more. However, in 1946, ENIAC demonstrated that electronic calculations had a future and paved the way for further developments that transformed science, industry, and everyday life.
