How Manhattan Changed Hands for a Few Guilders

At the beginning of 1626, Dutch trader Peter Minuit met with the local inhabitants on the island of Manhattan. The goal was to acquire this strategically located piece of land for the Dutch West India Company. In exchange for goods valued at 60 guilders, which was a modest sum at the time, they reached an agreement, the details of which remain shrouded in mystery. For Minuit and his associates, it was a key step in expanding Dutch influence in the New World.

The Dutch quickly established the settlement of New Amsterdam, which became a center for trade in furs and other commodities. The port city attracted traders and settlers from various corners of Europe. Although the original inhabitants may not have realized the significance of their transaction, New Amsterdam became an important point on the map of the colonial world. However, relations between the colonists and the locals were not always harmonious, leading to occasional conflicts.

After thirty-eight years, in 1664, English soldiers took control of the settlement and renamed it New York. The city gradually grew into one of the most important commercial and cultural centers in the world. This sale, which at the time seemed like a minor transaction, ultimately laid the foundation for the emergence of one of the most influential cities in history.
