Hunters and Fear in the Heart of Gévaudan
In the summer of 1764, the wooded hills and pastures of Gévaudan became the scene of terror. People were afraid to leave their homes because a mysterious beast, which no one could accurately describe, began attacking the inhabitants. The first victim was a young shepherdess, whose body was found mutilated. Fear spread and people began to speak of a beast larger than a wolf with red eyes.
Despite the fear, local nobles and hunters decided to hunt the beast. Armed with muskets and spears, they ventured into the forests, but the beast was always one step ahead. In 1765, King Louis XV was forced to send professional hunters to the region, but they were also unsuccessful. Reports of further attacks and failed attempts to capture the beast spread throughout France.
Although a large wolf, believed to be the beast, was captured in 1767, the attacks only ceased after another wolf was killed. To this day, it remains a question whether it was one or more attackers. The Beast of Gévaudan has become a symbol of unknown danger and continues to inspire speculation about what truly lurked in the dark forests of this region.
