Desperate Surrender at Yorktown
In the fall of 1781, British General Charles Cornwallis found himself in a hopeless situation. His troops were trapped in the small port town of Yorktown, Virginia. The combined American-French army, led by George Washington and Count de Rochambeau, gradually tightened the noose around the British positions. Cornwallis awaited help from the sea, but the French navy under Admiral de Grasse blocked the Chesapeake Bay, cutting off any escape plan.
The siege lasted several weeks. The American-French forces gradually reduced the space available to the British, and constant artillery bombardment destroyed the British fortifications. Aware of the hopelessness of the situation and the lack of supplies, Cornwallis finally surrendered on October 19, 1781. On the field before Yorktown, he laid down his weapon and surrendered to Washington, symbolically acknowledging the defeat of British forces in America.
This surrender effectively marked the end of the American Revolutionary War.
