Winter and Exhaustion Crushed the German 6th Army
In mid-November 1942, the German 6th Army under the command of General Friedrich Paulus found itself in a critical situation. Soviet forces launched Operation Uranus, a surprise counteroffensive that encircled the German troops inside Stalingrad. The Germans, exhausted from prolonged fighting and suffering from a lack of supplies, struggled to hold their positions in the city's ruins as temperatures plummeted well below freezing.
In December, German Field Marshal Erich von Manstein attempted to break the encirclement with Operation Winter Storm. Despite initial progress, his forces failed to link up with the encircled troops. Soviet resistance and harsh winter conditions thwarted the German plans. Paulus's army, with no escape or resupply options, gradually reached the brink of exhaustion and demoralization.
The order to surrender came on January 31, 1943. Paulus, promoted to Field Marshal in an attempt to prevent his surrender, capitulated along with more than 90,000 soldiers. The Battle of Stalingrad not only resulted in massive losses for Germany but also marked a crucial turning point in the war. The Soviet victory boosted their morale and initiated a series of offensives that gradually pushed Nazi forces out of Eastern Europe.
