Tokugawa Ieyasu, an experienced military leader, prepared his army for a decisive confrontation with the forces led by Ishida Mitsunari. Sekigahara, located on the main route between eastern and western Japan, became a crucial point for control over the entire country. The course of the battle initially seemed balanced, but a decisive turn occurred when one of Mitsunari's allied units, led by Kobayakawa Hideaki, betrayed and switched to Tokugawa's side. This unexpected move caused chaos in Mitsunari's ranks and allowed Tokugawa's forces to break through the enemy defenses. The betrayal at a critical moment in the battle thus secured a decisive victory for Tokugawa.
The outcome of the Battle of Sekigahara had far-reaching consequences. Tokugawa Ieyasu became the undisputed ruler of Japan and in 1603 established the Tokugawa Shogunate, which brought more than two centuries of relative peace and stability, known as the Edo period. This new political system unified Japan and laid the foundations for its modernization and development.
