Capture of the French King at Poitiers

At dawn on September 19, 1356, the English army led by the Black Prince prepared to face the numerically superior French forces. The English took a defensive position on elevated ground near Poitiers, shielded by dense forest. French King John II, known as John the Good, believed his numerical advantage would be decisive and opted for a direct attack, which proved to be a fatal mistake.

The French troops attempted to break through the English lines but were held back by the fire of English archers, who proved to be a key factor in the battle. The French cavalry, confused and fragmented, failed to breach the defenses and began to retreat. At the decisive moment, the Black Prince led a counterattack that caused chaos among the French ranks and led to their defeat.

The outcome of the battle was catastrophic for the French. King John II was captured, which shook French morale and weakened their position in the ongoing Hundred Years' War. The English not only secured a significant victory but also gained a strategic advantage, which they used to consolidate their power in France. The capture of the king led to political upheavals and changes within the French kingdom.
