The Blinding of Thousands of Bulgarians Alters History
On the slopes of Mount Belasica in the year 1014, Byzantine troops gathered under the command of Emperor Basil II. Their goal was to break through the Bulgarian defenses, which had long resisted. The Byzantine Empire and the Bulgarian Tsardom were engaged in a protracted war, and Basil, known for his tenacity, wanted to finally decide the fate of the Balkans. Now was the opportunity to crush Bulgarian power once and for all.
Basil II took advantage of the terrain and cunningly encircled the Bulgarian army led by Tsar Samuel. The Byzantine forces launched a surprise attack, leading to chaos among the Bulgarian ranks. After a bloody clash, the Bulgarians were defeated, and thousands of them were captured. Determined to break the Bulgarian will to resist, Emperor Basil ordered that 99 out of every 100 captives be blinded, leaving one eye to every hundredth man so he could lead the others home.
This brutal act had a devastating effect on Bulgarian morale and defense. Tsar Samuel, upon seeing his maimed soldiers, reportedly succumbed to a heart attack. The weakened Bulgaria was unable to mount effective resistance and fell under Byzantine rule within a few years. Basil II solidified his reputation as the 'Bulgar Slayer' and the Byzantine Empire strengthened its control over the Balkans.
