Ashoka's Transformation After the Bloodshed at Kalinga

On the battlefield of Kalinga lay thousands of bodies of fallen soldiers. Mauryan Emperor Ashoka stood among them, surrounded by dust and the stench of death. His armies had just triumphed in one of the bloodiest battles of antiquity, but the victory did not fulfill him. Kalinga, a wealthy kingdom in the area of present-day Orissa, had defended itself with a tenacity that surprised even the seasoned Mauryan generals.

Ashoka sent messengers of peace to distant corners of the world, and his edicts carved into stones throughout the empire proclaimed the values of compassion and tolerance.
