Hannibal's Deadly Trap at Cannae
On the hot plains near Cannae on August 2, 216 BC, two armies gathered. The Romans, led by consuls Lucius Aemilius Paullus and Gaius Terentius Varro, believed in their numerical superiority. With more than 80,000 men, they hoped for a decisive victory over Hannibal, who had only about half their strength. However, Hannibal had another ace up his sleeve: a brilliant plan to destroy the Roman legions with their own force.
Hannibal's plan was based on encirclement. His troops were arranged in a semicircle, with the central part deliberately retreating before the Roman advance. As the Romans pushed forward, the Carthaginian flanks closed around them. The Romans found themselves trapped, surrounded on all sides. The battle turned into a massacre, during which more than 50,000 Roman soldiers died, including Consul Paullus.
The consequences of the Battle of Cannae were devastating for Rome. The loss of such a large number of soldiers shook the republic and led to reforms in military strategy. Although Hannibal was unable to capitalize on his victory to capture Rome, his tactics at Cannae became legendary. They are still studied at military academies today as an example of brilliant maneuvering and strategic thinking.
