Unexpected Turn in the Heart of the Andes
Tension filled the square in Cajamarca. Francisco Pizarro, with his 168 men, awaited the arrival of the Inca ruler Atahualpa, who came with thousands of his warriors. The Incas, confident in their numerical superiority, were unaware that the Spaniards possessed gunpowder and steel weapons, which they had never encountered before. Atahualpa arrived in a litter, surrounded by a ceremonial procession, confident and unsuspecting of the impending betrayal.
At the moment Atahualpa refused to accept Christianity and the Bible, Pizarro gave the signal to attack. Spanish soldiers rushed out of their hiding places, their cannons and arquebuses striking the surprised Incas. The chaos in the square was deafening. The surprised Incas, unarmed and leaderless, quickly succumbed. Atahualpa was captured without the Spaniards suffering significant losses, which was unthinkable and humiliating for the Incas.
The capture of Atahualpa had catastrophic consequences for the Inca Empire. Without their leader, the empire began to disintegrate. The Spaniards gained an invaluable leverage - Atahualpa promised a ransom in the form of gold that was to fill a room to the ceiling. Although the ransom was paid, Atahualpa was eventually executed. This act paved the way for Spanish dominance over the entire empire and marked the beginning of the end of one of the greatest empires in South America.
