On a sleepy Sunday afternoon, June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was traveling through the streets of Sarajevo. The city was full of tension, as various nationalities and political interests mingled there. At the corner of the street, Gavrilo Princip, a young Serbian nationalist, waited with a pistol in his pocket and a plan to change the future of the Balkans in his mind.
When the car carrying the Archduke slowed down, Princip did not hesitate and fired. Two shots hit Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie. Both died within minutes. This act, although swift and unexpected, was the result of long-standing tensions between Serbia and Austria-Hungary, which was trying to maintain its power over the Balkans.
